Cooperation between IOM and International Hellenic University

Computer Lessons in Kavala

The International Organization for Migration and the International Hellenic University signed a cooperation agreement, aimed at training beneficiaries residing at the Kavala open accommodation site.

The President of the Accounting and Finance Department of the International Hellenic University, Mr. Stavros Valsamidis, visited the open accommodation facility and had first meeting with the 10 beneficiaries who will attend the “Training in Informatics” programmes.

The first programme, which starts today, is addressed to beginners and aims at familiarizing them with the use of computers, through the teaching of skills in word processing software and internet services. In early November, the second programme will be launched, and will be addressed to more experienced users who will be trained in the use of spreadsheets, presentations and specialized internet applications. After the completion of the programme, participation certificates will be issued to beneficiaries who will attest to their participation in the International University programme.

In today’s meeting - acquaintance of Mr. Valsamidis with the trainees, men and women, - details of the classes’ operation were discussed, beneficiaries’ questions were answered and the programme was drawn up, while two classes of beginners and more experienced users were created. The courses will be carried out mainly through distance learning, due to the protective measures for COVID-19, while the equipment provided by IOM and DIPAE. All human resources of the Organization will support the action with their physical presence.

The agreement with the International Hellenic University is a clear proof of the continuous efforts towards the participation of adult beneficiaries in educational activities that will facilitate their integration into local communities.

The open accommodation site of Kavala operates under the project “Supporting the Greek Authorities in Managing the National Reception System for Asylum Seekers and Vulnerable Migrants (SMS)”, in coordination with the Greek authorities and the funding of the European Commission – DG HOME.
