IOM and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, are deeply saddened by news reports that at least 18 people, possibly migrants and refugees, have been found dead in Avantas, close to Alexandroupoli in Northern Greece, as a result of the wildfires that have been raging in the area. Yesterday, the body of another person, thought to be a migrant or refugee, was found by local authorities in the nearby area of Lefkimmi in Evros.

Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the families of the deceased, as well as to all people in Greece who have been affected by the disastrous wildfires. Our thoughts also extend to those who are on the frontlines, fighting to bring the blazes under control and to provide assistance to the affected population.

IOM and UNHCR stand ready to provide support to the Greek authorities as required.
