IOM Greece statement on the death of the three-year-old boy in Thiva

IOM expresses its deep grief and sincere condolences to the family of Omed, a three-year-old boy who lost his life in the open accommodation site located at Thiva, Greece.

The boy, who was found drowned in the sewage tank, was from Iraq. He had just arrived with his family at the open accommodation site a few days ago.

The incident took place on Monday (18/06) evening, a few hours after his family reported his disappearance.

IOM, in collaboration with representatives of the Ministry of Migration Policy, have been present at the site from the beginning of the incident and are working in coordination with the Municipality of Thiva, the local fire service department, health institutions and the Hellenic Police. A team of psychologists and cultural mediators are supporting the family and the resident population.

The Greek Authorities have already started an investigation.
