Duration: 01 September 2017 - 31 December 2018

Description: IOM supports the Government of Greece (GoG) to reduce the effects of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Greece and empower migrants and refugees stranded in the country to exercise and enjoy their rights, by providing adequate living standards and services, as well as by promoting community-based practices.

Components:

  • Site Management Support (SMS): As the official Site Management Support (SMS) agency in ten sites in Attica, Central Greece and Northern Greece, IOM is providing support to the Government of Greece in camp coordination and management (CCCM). IOM teams assist the Camp Managers with the sites’ daily management and organization of activities and services. IOM Facility Coordinators and interpreters assist with day-to-day operation, follow up with maintenance needs/activities, organize and facilitate the provision of other actors' services and coordinate with national authorities. Community Support workers ensure the protection of vulnerable cases and empowerment of site residents to access local services and develop self-resilience. They build links with public structures/services, facilitate access and referrals to competent public services and promote the community's participation and involvement in daily site activities (site coordination, self-governance, cleaning/maintenance, empowerment groups, awareness-raising on facilities' usage).
  • Primary health care: Through a partnership with MdM-Greece IOM provides primary health care services by appointing medical teams in Thermopiles, Oinofyta and Serres.
  • Care and maintenance of accommodation sites: Through continuous needs assessments, IOM implements targeted shelter, WASH, as well as safety and security interventions in order to maintain and/or upgrade living standards and ensure dignified and humane living conditions for migrants and refugees residing in sites throughout Greece.
  • Safe zones for UMCs: The operation of safe spaces is of high importance for migrant and refugee children’s psychosocial wellbeing and health. Due to the high demand and the limited capacity in hospitality spaces, IOM in partnership with local NGOs operates three safe zones in the sites of Ritsona (Attica), Kavala and Drama (Northern Greece). Through this action, IOM covers the gap in child protection, provides targeted assistance to UMCs until their placement to the National Centre for Social Solidarity (EKKA) designated shelters and mitigates the heightened risks of abuse and/or further harm UMCs face while living in site settlements.
  • Education: In close collaboration with the Ministry of Education Research and Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Migration Policy, IOM is contributing to the implementation of the formal education plan for the inclusion of migrant and refugee children into the public education system. In particular, IOM facilitates the transportation of children to/from public primary and secondary schools and provides children of primary and pre-primary school age with school kits, containing the necessary school materials. In order to ensure their safety and security, all children are escorted by IOM specially appointed staff.
